"Bloom and CALM: Programming the Cloud"
9:30am

Abstract:

In this talk we'll present our group's research and development of Bloom, a data-centric programming language for building distributed systems. The talk will be structured like our Programming the Cloud class (http://programthecloud.github.com), where students get hands-on experience with core ideas in distributed systems and data management by coding them up in Bloom. Time permitting, we'll briefly discuss the CALM theorem, which connects database theory notions of monotonicity to distributed systems guarantees of eventual consistency. Audience members will be encouraged to follow along on their own computers.
