John Mitchell : 2012 Security Session

Individuals and enterprises face a variety of security challenges from mobile devices. Mobile devices may contain valuable credentials that provide access to sensitive resources, yet they have limited access control and other protection mechanisms. Enterprise mobile apps are often entry points into corporate services that require security defenses, and mobile malware has different characteristics than traditional malware aimed at creating desktop-based bot networks. This talk will summarize some of our past work on mobile device security and discuss current directions in mobile malware detection and related areas.

John Mitchell is the Mary and Gordon Crary Family Professor in the Stanford Computer Science Department. His research in computer security focuses on trust management, privacy, security analysis of network protocols, and web security. He has also worked on programming language analysis and design, formal methods, and other applications of mathematical logic to computer science. Prof. Mitchell is currently involved in the multi-university PORTIA research project to study privacy concerns in databases and information processing systems, and the NSF TRUST Center.
