2017 Poster Sessions : Memory Retrieval in Amnesic Mice with Electrical Stimulation

Abstract:
Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease with long-term memory loss at an early stage. Currently there is no effective cure. Here we propose that by electrically stimulating specific hippocampus memory engram cells activated in the learning process, artificial contextual fear memory can be retrieved in amnesic mice. By administrating long-term potentiation protocols, the memory can be naturally recalled without external stimulation. To achieve this goal, we will build wirelessly powered high-channel count recording and stimulation circuits along with high-quality 3D electrode probe arrays. Real-time 3D neuron signals in learning and recall processes will be recorded. This study will demonstrate the potential of electrical stimulation for clinical treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and help unravel the time evolution of memory consolidation.

Bio:
Yi Liu is a first-year EE PhD student in Prof. Ada Poon’s group. She received her B.S degree in physics at Peking University in 2016. Then her research interest switched from optoelectronics to neuroscience. Currently she is devoted to memory retrieval for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. In her spare time, she likes painting, cooking, playing tennis, and travelling.
